Josh, on the morning of his thirty-second birthday, for seemingly no apparent reason wakes up to find himself in the massive crater of an active volcano. Examining his surroundings of jagged rocks and ashes, he seems to hear faint words and chants, as if the ground he is on is itself alive and speaking to him. He also comes to the unfortunate realization that in addition to being hopelessly lost, he is barefoot, his favorite shoes mysteriously missing. Looking off into the distance, he notes the rising gasses from the distant mouth of the volcano, which weave about the sky in mystical patterns, and for a split second appear to take the form of a pair of red sneakers. Confused, but strangely moved, he begins walking toward this ominous vision.
